講座題目：Trial of structural stability and utilization in underground quarries

報告人簡介：

Takafumi SEIKIBorn in Japan. His fields of expertise are rock mechanics and underground space utilization. He is a member of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, the Japan Society of Geotechnical Engineers, the Japan Society of Materials Science, a member of the Japanese Society for Rock Mechanics, a member of the International Society of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering, an professor and PhD supervisor at Utsunomiya University, Japan, and is currently involved in projects related to the dynamic and static stability assessment of rock structures and effective use of underground space as a research subject. He has published more than 30 papers in Japanese and international journals and co-edited 18 scientific monographs and conference proceedings.

內容簡介：

Utsunomiya City is located approximately 100 km north of Tokyo. The prefectural capital city of Tochigi prefecture is famous for 餃子in Japan. The city is also famous for mining 大谷石(Oya tuff or Oya stone) as stone materials from the underground quarries. The stone materials are mainly used for building retaining wall and decorating buildings. After mining those stones, many underground spaces have occurred in narrow area in Oya town for over 100 years. Almost quarries have abandoned and some of them are re-used for sight-seeing places. As Oya tuff is categorized as soft rock, it is easy to produce the building goods, but to weather easily. So sometime it is problems to use for long time. Based on the background of Oya underground quarries and Oya tuff, the speaker and his research grope focused on studying the factor of weathering process of Oya tuff and the structural stability assessment of the underground quarry for re-using the spaces. In this talk, the speaker will present those trials. He welcomes idea and cooperative possibility from the audiences.
